Centre for Life Sciences

Space is essential in a building where students and lecturers endeavour to find answers to the key questions of life – they need space to think and space to come together. The new Centre for Life Sciences, constructed by Kampstaal Staalbouw and Voortman Staalbouw for the University of Groningen, offers them this space.

Rudy Uytenhaak designed the nine-storey building. Standing at a height of around 40 metres and covering an area of roughly 35,000 m2, this new university building comprises educational spaces, offices and laboratories. It incorporates 3,400 tonnes of steel.

Campus transformation

The Centre for Life Sciences is home to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and brings together the three research fields of plant, fundamental and animal studies in two connected wings of the building. The new building is part of a major plan to transform the surrounding area into a spacious campus with distinctive buildings and a leafy setting. This project cost €60 million to realise.
