New dairy factory

Together with Fonterra, the A-Ware Food Group is having a new dairy factory built in Heerenveen. Kampstaal Staalbouw is involved in the construction of this 16,000 m2 complex.

That tempting yellow cheese you see when you open your fridge is a simple pleasure that has been produced on an industrial scale. Soon this kind of product will be rolling out of this new dairy factory in Heerenveen. Together with EconStruct B.V. from Leeuwarden and construction firm Jorritsma from Bolsward, Kampstaal Staalbouw is working on the construction of a 16,000 m2 complex – based on a design by Bert van der Ploeg architectuur in Goutum – comprising a factory, warehouses, a powder silo and milk intake facility.

Additional focus on preservation techniques

A factory’s form is entirely dependent on its function. That’s why no two types of factory look the same. This was also borne in mind when it came to the steel structure. For this project the process technology has to be integrated during the construction process.

A special climate is maintained inside a dairy factory and steel tubes, metal profiles and structural steel have to be able to withstand this. Different structural elements therefore require different preservation techniques. Kampstaal guarantees the durability of these components by means of hot-dip galvanisation and three-coat paint systems, for example. All in all, the factory is constructed from around 1,400 tonnes of steel, with a value of around €2,000,000. The new building is due to be completed in December 2014.
